Topic(s): Temptation
The first part of Luke 4 is about the temptations Christ faced in the wilderness. I usually read this story from Matthew, however when reading it in Luke there is a big difference in the wording. Verse 2 says "being tempted for fourty days by the devil..."
Traditionally, the view is that Jesus was tempted after the fourty days, but with this wording it appears as though it is saying that Jesus was tempted all throughout the 40 days. In other words, Satan was throwing his best temptations at Jesus for 40 straight days. This puts the whole ordeal in a whole new light!
That would make the three temptations recorded just the tip of the iceberg. You can imagine all the temptations Satan would throw at Christ if Satan had free reign for 40 straight days. It gives a whole new perspective on what Christ had to go through.
In verse 13 it says "Now when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from Him." This implies that the devil threw every single temptation he has in his arsenal against mankind against Christ, all during that short period of time!
If I am interpreting this correctly, what an amazing thought.
